Why the Coast Miwok Statue Belongs at Dunphy Park, Sausalito
Dunphy Park, located along the Sausalito waterfront, is an ideal site for the Coast Miwok statue because it sits on ancestral Coast Miwok land—an area once home to thriving villages that shaped the region long before modern settlement. The park’s open, welcoming setting offers both residents and visitors a chance to pause and reflect on the deep Indigenous history of Southern Marin. A Coast Miwok statue here would honor the original stewards of the land, recognize their enduring presence, and provide an educational and cultural focal point within a beloved community space. Positioned against the natural beauty of Richardson Bay, the statue would harmonize with the landscape and become a meaningful landmark that celebrates Sausalito’s true heritage.
